Reading Between the Lines of a Job Ad, What the Wording Is Really Telling You

Every job ad is written by someone, and the choices they make, what gets included, what gets left out, what gets softened, all tell you something before you ever apply.

“Fast paced environment” can mean genuinely dynamic work, or it can mean under resourced and always behind. “Competitive salary” with no figure attached often means the number is not one they are proud of. “Must be a team player” repeated more than once in a short ad can be a sign the last person was not, or that the team dynamic is already strained. None of these phrases are proof of a problem, but patterns across an ad are worth paying attention to.

Salary is the clearest signal of all. A business that is upfront about pay, whether commission, salary or a combination across Property Management, Sales, Administration or Support, is usually a business that is upfront about everything else too. One that dodges the question is telling you how that conversation will go later, at review time, at negotiation time, at every point where clarity matters.

The goal is not to overanalyse every word. It is to notice when the language is doing work to hide something, rather than describe something.

Before you apply, read the ad twice. The first time for what it says, the second time for what it does not.
